Blog and portfolio initial launch

Below is the original text of the first blog post made on the original version of this portfolio/blog website, posted Feb 22, 2022. As you can see, some of my assumptions about blogging have changed since writing this post; I’m happy to be learning and improving 🙂

Welcome to my Notion blog!

I’m very pleased to be putting up this blog, I think it’s time to realize the dream! Yes, it’s fair to say that starting this blog has been something of a dream of mine. Don’t confuse what I’m saying with “starting a blog has been a dream of mine”, no no no, quite to the contrary. I’ve launched several blogs in the past; as the old adage goes, “Staring [a blog] is the easiest thing in the world, I’ve done it a thousand times!” There’s lots of easy platforms to publish one, everything from LiveJournal to WordPress, now even Wix and Weebly. Even though I would start, there was always something not quite right…

What’s special about this blog?

What’s special about it is that I made it. This blog is my blog. I coded it all. Myself. The backend, frontend, middle-end (?). I put it up on my VPS and configured the server (with help from friends and the Internet of course). This has always appeals to me, but I never had the technical skill to do it until now.

Another thing that’s special about this blog is that I’m using Notion.so to manage and publish the content. I absolutely love Notion, it’s my solution to organizing all my notes. The idea that I could also use it to manage my blog and portfolio content just blew me away. As you can see, I’ve risen to the occasion, coded a module, and now the blog is up and running!

But blogging isn’t about coding, it’s about writing!

I know, I know. But every time I got started with a blog, it seemed to fizzle out. There was always a reason, ranging from the “I don’t have time to write for it” to the “it doesn’t look exactly how I’d like it to” excuse. Now that this obstacle has been surmounted, I suppose it’s my responsibility to keep it up. What will I write about? I guess we’ll see…

Why is that even important?

To be honest, I’m not even sure why it’s so important to me that it’s my blog. I guess I won’t really care about the site unless I put enough work into it. After all, doesn’t putting work into something make it more valuable to us? I think that’s called the sunken-cost fallacy. Fallacy or not, this site has been quite a journey and I’m glad I finally made it here.
