Project Background
Back in the heady days of 2016, I worked at an IB World School in Gliwice, Poland, where I was asked to be the IB MYP Coordinator responsible for bringing our candidate school through the authorization process. Working in public education is hard, no matter where you are, and Poland was no different. The school had limited resources and this fledgeling program had to work within the boundaries (i.e. budget) it was given.
One of the major hurdles I encountered in implementing the program was the requirement for individuals report parts that presented students’ data in both a quantitative form (specifically the 7 points IB grading scale) and also a qualitative form, i.e. teacher comments. Our school did have Google’s educational suite and having learned about macros not that long before this, I set out to code my first software solution: something I very plainly named the MYP Report Card Generator.
How it works
- MYP Coordinator inputs class rosters, including relevant student and teacher details
- Program generate individual spreadsheets for each teacher, allowing them to input a percentage, which is converted to local grade scale (in this case the Polish 5 point grade scale) and the IB 7 point grade scale, as well as a comment for each student
- Teachers can also input MYP specific data, e.g. for Approaches to Learning, etc.
- Once grades have been inputted, the coordinator can generate individualized reports for students based on teachers’ data. This data can be printed and given as a report.
